Stroller Accessories for Older Kids

When it comes to finding stroller accessories for older kids, you may discover it pays to use your imagination.  There’s not a lot out there in terms of toys marketed specifically for stroller use beyond the age of infant.  An online search for travel toys can be helpful, but most ideas are targeted towards car travel, so you will have to sift through them and make some alterations to suit your situation.

One such toy, classified under Travel Toys for Toddlers, is the My First Madeline Playset by Learning Curve International. An interactive all-fabric play set that comes with a 7” tall Madeline doll, this set features a miniature environment, thus providing a little more novelty than a doll only.  Stroller accessories for older children need to offer more complexity than infant toys, but still avoid having pieces that may cause injury or get lost.

Another idea that has been suggested for travel with children is finger puppets such as the Little Green Plane Finger Puppets: Bear, frog, mouse. Made of soft felt, these puppets are lightweight and easy to pack and carry and designed for ages three and up.

Drawing boards such as Magna Doodle and Etcha Sketch have been popular for decades, allowing children to be creative without making a mess.  Use in a stroller will vary by the child in this case, but at least there are no small pieces to go astray.

Who remembers sewing cards? Here’s a relatively simple and inexpensive activity that would travel well – buy or make your own by cutting out shapes in cardboard and hole punch holes along the edge every inch or so, then have your child stitch with a shoelace or piece of yarn (with tape wrapped around one end). 

Magnetic games such as Wooly Willy are another entertaining option for the older child for use in a stroller.  Small, light and with infinite variations, they should provide amusement for a while. 

Finally, perhaps plush toys or dolls can be attached by leash to the stroller – ensuring there are no overlong cords to get wrapped around the youngster of course.  Great tips moms have to offer in all of these cases include using toys that are reserved only for outings to maintain the novelty. And don’t forget the snacks!
